This course examines the impact of poor balance, proprioception, and postural control, weak muscle tone, and restrictive-repetitive behaviors on intentional movement development for preschoolers with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Participants will be empowered to both identify deficits and describe evidence-based intervention strategies that address these motor challenges in order to improve social, cognitive, and linguistic outcomes for preschoolers with ASD. Learning Outcomes
- After this course, participants will be able to describe how motor, balance, postural control, and proprioception challenges impact preschoolers with ASD.
- After this course, participants will be able to describe how to identify hypotonia (weakness) in the core and its impact on proximal and distal movements in the body, and identify evidence-based strategies to improve postural tone in therapy.
- After this course, participants will be able to describe the impact of repetitive, restrictive behaviors (RRBs) on children with ASD and identify skills that replace RRBs with intentional movements.
