I was appalled and deeply unsettled when I heard this presenter say, “...restrictive repetitive movements are poison to the brain. We really don’t want to see that”. Many autistic folks have shared the importance of any kind of stimming and how shaming, gate-keeping, and punishing stimming is traumatic and detrimental. Sure, some of the strategies were great, but the rest of this presentation was ableist and compliance-based.

Normally I love Kelly's presentations, but this time I felt she spoke too fast and presented too much information in the allotted time. It did not give me confidence with the course materials at all. I would have to spend a lot more time analyzing a child to determine what their visual and auditory deficiencies were then what to do next. Her examples were given so fast I didn't have time to write them down or process what it meant.

Her enthusiasm is infectious and her knowledge is amazing. I’m learning more about kids with ASD in a few hours than I have in years. As a seasoned clinician working with a new population in a totally new environment, (Hospital/Adult Geriatric to Outpatient/Pediatric). I’m happy to find that I’m using some good techniques intuitively, but happier to see what I was doing wrong. I’m excited about making the changes that will help my amazing kiddos.

I would’ve appreciated an overview of the research that she was specifically referencing, since it was done so often. I did wonder exactly what the research said as opposed to the conclusions/applications that she made from it. For example, how did she pick the speech targets and paragraphs? Why target (ie “can you sweep(?) it to me”) vs. ones that might be applicable in more situations? Also wondered about comprehension of these long targets and functional outcomes/generalization.
