This text-based course is a transcript of the webinar, “Private Practice Serving Ages 3-6,” presented by Rebecca L. Jarzynski, M.S. CCC-SLP.
>> Rebecca Jarzynski: Thank you for being here. I am excited to share this information with you, and I also wanted to mention before I get started that I knew Nancy McKinley and I really admired her and her beautiful spirit. I am honored to be a part of this conference that honors that spirit.
To give you context for this presentation, I will share a bit about my private practice now and I will share more as we move through the presentation. I do have a small private practice. At the most, I have about 15 visits per week. That is about three days a week of work. I am the sole owner and practitioner. I serve primarily toddlers and preschoolers, and I provide services mainly in homes and daycares. I also have a small office that families can come into if they reside outside a 15 mile radius from my central location. I accept both private pay and insurance, and I would say right now it is about 50/50 for each of those.
The following are the topics I plan to address:
- Why Private Practice?
- Business Planning
- Marketing
- Documentation
- Billing and Coding
- HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act)
My goal is to give you the most important information on each of these topics and also provide a number of resources that can be utilized to obtain more information on any of these topics.
Why Private Practice?
Quality
The first topic is why Private Practice? Private practice carries with it both risk and challenge. Why would someone be willing to take that on? I knew why I had chosen to do that, but I wanted to know what other people thought. I asked this question to about 800 members of the “Private Practice in SLP” Facebook page. The word that kept coming up over and over was “quality.” I completely agree with this word. This is the main reason we do private practice. When we do private practice, we can have control over variables such as caseload size, the frequency and duration of sessions, and the service delivery model. Because we can have control over those variables, we can provide services of the highest quality that is possible.
