Private Practice in SLP and Audiology
The American Academy of Private Practice in Speech Pathology and Audiology (AAPPSPA) is the voice of, and resource for, private practitioners in speech language pathology and audiology. We have approximately 200 private practice SLPs and audiologists throughout North America. Some AAPPSPA members have been in private practice for more than 30 years. Our members' practices range from single person offices to large practices with over fifty employees, providing speech therapy and audiology services for infants, children and adults throughout the United States and Canada. Over the years, private practice speech-language pathologists and audiologists have counted on AAPPSPA, a national non-profit organization, for leadership, professional support, resources and solutions.
The goals, objectives and interests of the academy have been developed by speech language pathologists (SLPs) and audiologists who direct and participate in private practice settings. The functions and concerns of private practice differ significantly from other areas of service in our profession. AAPPSPA members hold the highest qualifications within the professions of speech-language pathology and audiology. Members of AAPPSPA are part of a network of dedicated professionals practicing to help those with communication problems.
AAPPSPA fosters the highest ideals and principles of private practice. AAPPSPA has remained focused on the functions and concerns of private practitioners. AAPPSPA provides a forum for interaction and communication among those in private practice and creates and elevates professional standards in private practice while providing ongoing interaction relevant to the private practitioner.
The American Academy of Private Practice in Speech Pathology and Audiology originated with an informal meeting of private practitioners. The organization was previously named Speech Pathologists and Audiologists in Private Practice ("SPAPP") when it began in San Francisco in November, 1964. Meetings of SPAPP were held twice a year in major cities throughout the United States. SPAPP continued successfully and expanded until February, 1969, at which time it incorporated as the "American Academy of Private Practice in Speech Pathology and Audiology (AAPPSPA)" as a national non-profit organization. On August 14, 1996, the AAPPSPA website "went live" and can be found at www.aappspa.org.
For AAPPSPA members in private practice communication with each other is vital. Communicating and resource sharing are two key benefits of membership in AAPPSPA. AAPPSPA members learn about running private practices and related issues and have been using the Internet and the secure AAPPSPA website since 1996. Members participate in the AAPPSPA list serve and discuss issues relevant to private practice. Members have instant access to daily messages with other private practitioners across America. Members share valuable administrative, marketing, clinical information and other resource "gems." The AAPPSPA has an online membership directory and members receive instant notices about AAPPSPA business. Late in 2006, the AAPPSPA website will become more dynamic as we introduce an interactive website with a message board, live chats, and forum groups in addition to the current list serve.
AAPPSPA holds two formal meetings annually. One meeting occurs during the annual American Speech and Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) Convention. This AAPPSPA event is free of charge and all private practitioners in speech pathology and audiology are welcome to attend.
