My awareness about talking directly with kids about the differences in other children in order to build understanding was increased. The video clips and artwork shared helped me better see how it could be beneficial to let students with communication disorders explore and share their feelings and experiences with me as a therapist as well as their peers.

I do not believe enough time is spent in explaining to young children the diverse conditions affecting their friends and classmates. I have noticed an inherent impatience and annoyance with children who are different. I appreciate this course because it does not step away from the need to take the time to teach these children some understanding and empathy, even if it is not a goal.

This is an excellent topic to address in our field that is not addressed enough. In my years of experience I have worked with preschoolers, school age, middle school, high school students and adults. I have rarely, if ever, experienced biases at the preschool age. I observed negative attitudes mostly at grades 4-7. I observed some prejudice at the Elementary age. Parents need to be educated about this. Teachers should stop saying, "You HAVE to go to speech now".

The speaker has done research and understands the difficulty that people with communication disorders face. She is sensitive towards those with disorders as well as towards those who don't understand and seeks to bring harmony amongst all, teaching children at an early age on accepting others as they are and reducing fear driven behaviors.

My experience as an SLP and trying to handle situations when children ask about students with communication problems or problems with a disability, I use honesty and an educational type approach along with encouraging acceptance and empathy. This has been highly effective in making all feel comfortable in therapy and on campus. I feel this seminar validated my approach and gave me more ideas.

Most people do not talk about the social ramifications for speech-language kids because most people (who are not SLP’s) do not know “HOW.” The difference is easily identified by pointing at the child and saying something like,”that child’s speech is bad.”Ok so they do that BUT IMAGINE that WE TEACH PEERS,STUDENTS, & Parents about responding in these awkward situations.“Yes his speech is different but let’s see what he is telling us.”
