I always enjoy working on courses that discuss different cultures as this is something I have always been interest in. Even in my life outside of and before becoming an SLP I found a fascination with learning about other cultures, so I constantly want to be aware for the moments I may happen to have a child come for services that I have little experience working with. Being in a rural area there are several cultures we do not see, but at least being exposed helps me to be prepared.

This whole series of courses was really helpful and I especially liked how speakers referenced and built on previous sessions. This particular session was helpful in explaining how to involve parents and the importance of understanding the cultural influences not just on the structure of the narrative, but also considering where and when families have conversations may differ among cultures (e.g. dinner table conversations are not the norm for all cultures).

Such a great presentation highlighting the importance of narrative ability and the lifelong reasons for its significance. Especially helpful were all the guidelines and suggestions on how to consider families/parents of different cultural backgrounds. Also valuable was the validity given to informal narrative assessment that can be easily and inexpensively done with any child of any background.

Dr. McCabe's research in narratives is legendary. It was fascinating (but not surprising) to see how cultural values influence personal narratives and yet sadly European American values tend to be viewed as the standard and different cultural values tend to be viewed as deficient or inferior.

This information isn't available anywhere else and is so critical to understanding childhood narrative expectations across cultures! Our US academic standards definitely do seem to "work against the grain" in this regard and need to consider this vitally important information as it relates to, at minimum, the approaches we take to teach oral and written narrative practices in schools, if not a need to reconsider a change in the expected outcomes completely.
