I appreciated the support and response to showing why a student does/doesn't need SLI, especially for articulation and the social impacts. I appreciated the recommendation in order to involve more staff/resources to support the student. I agree that we are a team not always a silo and that I now have more data to prove this point.

Presentation of previously non-considered ideas for: (1)team-approach services to help support Ed staff & facilitate carryover of communication skills acquired to non-clinical settings, (2)providing referral sources w/ handouts, listing qualifying criteria (& sources for data re: same) to: (A)improve the understanding of qualifying criteria by referral sources, & (B)empower referral sources to assist w/ the collecting of data needed for referrals to meet qualifying criteria.

The interesting thing about this course is that a co-worker and I had just had the discussion that oftentimes teachers, parents, and even admin do not recognize the difference between medical-based and school-based speech therapy services. We are having a difficult time as SLPs in the school system with outside practices sending us recommendations on what to do with a student when the student does not even qualify for services in the school system. That is hard to make parents understand.

With over 20 years of experience in public schools, I've seen how much things have changed over the years. The instructor’s insights were right on target. I'd point out that the RTI/MTSS process can differ from state to state and county to county, and the training available to SLPs/SLPAs on these processes can vary as well. Ongoing, accurate education on these topics is crucial for SLPs to thrive in this environment. Additionally, increasing caseloads contribute significantly to SLP burnout.
