This course has helped me rethink the approach to treating students with SSD and speech service in a school-based environment, in that I will be looking more closely at differentiating articulatory-based errors from phonologically-based errors. Tailoring SSD methods and service type/ frequency to the specific student needs and progress. I can connect how the methods and approach can help the students increase their literacy skills, written communication, and their peer relations.

Speech Sound production can be very complex. The break down of the information made it easier to determine the different approaches that may be used on students with speech sound disorders. I thought this was great in going over the different approaches for children who are struggling with these phonological processing errors. I think (and this is of no fault to the presenter) that it is so difficult as a school-based provider to bear the responsibility for these students alone, but I've found that reading specialists think it's a "speech issue" and I do my best to educate them that it is "not JUST a speech issue" when these students have ALL phonemes in their repertoires.

The content of the coursework was very applicable to my current caseload. Always interesting since we have a reading specialist and IEP reading teachers that work on the phonological areas, so we focus on the phonemic. Our caseloads would be so much higher if we did.
