Case examples are discussed that incorporate multiple academic content areas, as well as assistive technology and self-determination, into IEPs for students with moderate to severe disabilities.

Ginevra Courtade, PhD, is an Associate Professor in Special Education at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. Dr. Courtade has worked in the field of moderate-to-severe disabilities for 15 years as a classroom teacher, a grant-funded project trainer, and a research associate. She now trains teachers and conducts research at the university level. She has numerous publications to her credit, including Teaching to Standards: Science, Aligning IEPs to State Standards, and 6 Successful Strategies for Teaching to State Standards. Currently, Dr. Courtade works closely with the Kentucky Department of Education to provide training and support to new teachers of students with moderate-to-severe disabilities. She also trains teachers nationally to implement academic curricula for their students.

Diane Browder
PhD
Dr. Diane Browder, Professor Emeritus, was the Lake and Edward P. Snyder Distinguished Professor of Special Education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte before retiring in 2017. Dr. Browder has over three decades of research and writing on assessment and instruction for students with severe developmental disabilities. She worked closely with the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System to develop new interventions and curricula for students with autism spectrum disorders and intellectual disabilities through grants in reading, science, and math. She currently provides online instruction for undergraduates at East Carolina University. Dr. Browder’s research has been recognized through multiple awards, most notably, the International CEC, Division for Autism and Developmental Disabilities Burton Blatt Humanitarian Award, 2018 and the International CEC Special Education Research Award, 2018. In 2011 Dr. Browder was recognized by the state of North Carolina with the O. Max Gardner Award for research that has made a contribution to humanity.
