It gave some specific direction to the SLP about how to approach the topic with a person with aphasia and caregiver and what to do is one person is onboard and the other is not. I like the idea of having specific in-services and/or workshops with counselors to train them to communicate with folks who have aphasia.

You are SO right. This is an area where SLPs receive no training, therefore, we don’t incorporate it in our practices.HOWEVER, because communication is at the very foundation of building and maintaining INTIMATE relationships, it’s just common sense that SLP’s would facilitate these conversations, if wanted, with our patients and their care partners. Thank you for a very enlightening presentation!

This presenter addressed a topic that is usually avoided, especially in the SLP world, since it is not directly our area of expertise or within our scope. But the reminder that the strategies we provide for communication to address sensitive topics is so important and was stated so directly and easily here. The video was an amazing way to show how programs can really help people increase awareness of their potential to reintegrate into the community and how others can help facilitate this proces

The class stressed the importance of rehabilitation communication, with individuals who have aphasia, as a result of a stroke,or C.V.A. or car accident, because the stroke, can cause the individual to have an 84% decrease in communication skills, with their spouse or significant other, as well as, family members and friends. Often, after a stroke, ''friends disappear.''

Not many people are comfortable to talk about a specific topic like this one but what makes it excellent is that as an SLPA it's important to know what steps to make when faced with a patient who is facing many challenges because of a difficulty in communication. In other words it gives individuals a better understanding of what effects can happen or what strategies can be useful in dealing with a patient who has trouble dealing with different situations because of having no support in relation

I had 20 years experience working with adult stroke cases and TBI at a community speech-hearing clinic on campus at a local community college. These questions were always brought up by me during the interview prior to treatment and we set up group meetings that caregivers and recipients could voluntarily attend. Clients and caregivers strongly supported the idea and appreciated referral to community resources for help.

This course made me realize that I have been overlooking a very important aspect of communication building in my aphasia therapy. It also made me realize how much I miss working with aphasia as often as I did, as so much of the caseload is now focused on dysphagia. I will definitely implement the techniques I have learned as a result of this course.
