Dr. Hu's personal experiences of being a child and growing to an adult with hearing loss and especially the impact of this experience as a parent and as a daughter to her own parents was impactful for me. This information has caused me to reflect on ways to professionally and respectfully assist families of D/HoH children as they navigate the identification process and further forward.

Very engaging presentation about the DHH child, culture, and community. I appreciated learning about all the support professionals that can be involved in fully supporting the hearing abilities of an individual. Also unique to this presentation was the speaker herself and her personal story about being part of the DHH community and how that influences her current audiologic practices.

As an EI SLP, I think we often jump in with our "starting points" and automatically begin making referrals for families and not always taking the time to first sit with the family, process what they know, what they have questions about, and where they're at in the process before jumping deep into therapeutic resources for parents to decide on. I also was not aware of DHH mentors will definitely look into my state's resources to be able to share with my families.

This would have been a great presentation for a different audience- for example families, the community, D/HH support groups. As a presentation for professionals it didn't give much clinical information, research, or application steps for implementing procedures. It felt like the speaker was a person with hearing loss recounting her own experiences and she happened to be an audiologist. It would have been more meaningful from the perspective of an audiologist who happened to be HH.

The presenter knows a great deal and clearly has a caring heart, but the information was quite simplistic for me as a seasoned (40 years +) SLP. I was also distracted when she read from her notes off to the side of the screen, so that it felt like she wasn't speaking directly to her audience.

I have followed Mama Hu Hears on instagram for a long time and loved hearing her talk. I appreciated her perspective as both a person with a hearing loss, having a child with a hearing loss, and working with kids with a hearing loss. Knowledge was a little basic for me as I am in the field, but I got the impression this session wasn't meant for a long time professional in the field. Her perspective was the awesome takeaway.

I am a SLP who evaluates preschool-age children and I am the grandmother of a 9 month old grandson with a mild-to-moderate sensori-neural hearing loss. I truly appreciate the emphasis on acknowledging and empowering parents of DHH children. My daughter did not feel as though the pediatric audiologist displayed empathy nor did she give choices when her son received his diagnosis. I recommend all early intervention providers watch this course.
