This course defined and discussed different types of brain injury very well and discussed the SLP's role in assessment and treatment in detail. I loved that the topic of concussion was included, especially since we see so many students who experience concussions while participating in sports. I thoroughly enjoyed this course.

A good overall account of possible long-term deficits following the TBI. Making an SLP aware of what to expect when working with children with TBI and understanding that not every possible deficit may be present immediately following injury, but may develop as the brain develops. Also, it was interesting to hear that school-based work with children with TBI may actually be sort of a rehab work! This is important!

Having recently experienced working with an adult with ABI, collaboration of professionals is essential to allow maximum functionality of skills. In the schools, we often did home visits prior to the student returning to school with our team (SLP, OT, PT, SpEd teacher). This was most beneficial for the student, family, and communication with the administration.

Pediatric brain injury is not a population I’ve ever worked with. Having worked in a school system for many years, I was never aware of working with a student with even a mild brain injury. I feel more aware and educated to deal with this if it were to arise.

As an SLP who works with TBI patients in the medical setting-- I often wonder how/what happens when the schools are taking over the care upon discharge from the hospital. That mindset of thinking got me often wondering about what happens to the kids with concussions who are never hospitalized- this course does a great job summarizing the gap in those areas and how we can try to minimize them!
