Some of the points seemed too idealistic. What would really help make strides in getting students with TBI access to services is a grassroots movement started by the children themselves and their families to raise awareness and generate funding at congressional levels. Patients with ALS successfully advocated for themselves and increased funding by 80 million annually. Additional funds would give schools the option to collaborate with TBI specialists and/or hire additional SLPs to address needs.

The presenter had a nice understanding of the impact of TBI/ABI on students in school settings and the importance of curriculum based assessment versus standardized assessments as a basis for validating SLP services. It is my experience that administrators rely too heavily on standardized assessment results and these students can often do well enough on them to pass them, yet there is a definite lag in their performance in the classroom.

It served as a good reminder that children who experience TBI, even those mild in nature may have lasting effects. SLPs are invaluable in the process of programming for these children both in the present and the future. Suggestions for how SLPs might be included from the onset were helpful.

The presenter, Dr. Jennifer Lundine, shared that, “at least 2-states have already developed a, ‘Head Injury’ Screener to assist in early identification of ‘Head Injury’ students in a school”. These children need to be Carefully tracked and, given collaborative resources (teacher, parent or other professionals) throughout their education.

I was aware of everything that was discussed in the presentation, but had not thought about them in regards to TBI or ABI. After participating in multiple kindergarten screenings I dont think Ive ever heard the parents asked about prior head injuries. I think that we just assume that parents would tell us, but not all parents are aware of the long term difficulties that may occur due to head injuries. They assume that after a certain amount of time their child will be as before.
