This is a must-watch course for any SLPs working with autistic people! Especially helpful for those of us who have been out of school for awhile - unfortunately, many of the “bad goal” examples are things I regularly saw during my grad school training and work. Thanks to courses like this, I’m getting a much-needed update to my perspective on autism. Really appreciate the presenter’s perspective, all the research she included, and the examples of specific goals.

This is one of the best courses I have taken in this area. The updated goal information was absolutely fantastic. I work in an ABA clinic and have always felt that the social skills training I often witness is just not right/not natural. This course gives me the confidence in updating to new best practices.

It brought so many things into perspective that I haven't thought about. For example, my child is high functioning autistic and as his mom and therapist, we have been working on learning all those typical socialization skills. However, this workshop made me realized how wrong I was and I should be helping him to self advocate, problem solved and accept his different socialization skills and it is okay. Training non autistic people accept autistic is crucial in my kid's life and for others too

The additional links to visual representations of the research were very helpful. She cited good research frequently, plus her own experiences. She fully explained the reasons for flipping SLP/goals into accommodations and supports for the student. This instructor was direct and knowledgeable about the differences and dangers in monotropism programs and compliance based ABA. Thank you for not-skirting around the issue.

Julie- This is probably the most eye-opening, thought-provoking continuing education course I have ever watched. I am a veteran SLP guilty of writing ALL the goals you referenced in pursuit of social skills "competency" with my neurodiverse students. I am going to rethink everything. Thank you so much. I guess it's normal to feel good and terrible at the same time. I want to learn and become a better SLP. I just can't thank you enough.

While I 100% agree that nonautistics need to be taught about communication differences, this course was very difficult to listen to. Stating that ABA is grooming children is a dangerous and harmful statement. ABA can absolutely teach children to self advocate, and this blanket statement about grooming is disgusting.

This presentation is extremist and misinterprets/overapplies the research based evidence. While autistic individuals should certainly be respected, learn to self-advocate, and not feel forced to blend in at all times; it is unrealistic to expect that others will make accommodations for them across all situations. Acceptance of neurodiversity does not preclude gently teaching children skills that will help them to interact successfully with the majority.
