This is a very neglected area in nursing homes and care centers, at least where I live. My SIL had PD with early dementia,& was in care centers/hospitals for 6 months before her passing. As a retired SLP, I helped her in the bathroom, with oral care, getting her to the shower, etc. It was amazing how this area didn't seem very important, even when there was an OT/SLP on staff. Communication & your approach is SO very important to motivate, & improve QoL. Thank you for your insights!

Well organized, well explained. I am uncertain how much of it I can use for actually providing clinical services in the bathroom, given my current clinical structure. However, I can take the information provided to use within my clinical setting to some extent.

All of the practical examples for helping patients with ADLs were very helpful. When I was a practicing SLP in a SNF, I felt very uncomfortable when I patient needed assistance with bathroom tasks. If I listened to the lecture then, this would’ve boosted my confidence with assisting with ADLs as an SLP.

Despite having years of dementia experience as both an SLP and a caregiver to someone with dementia, this course was an exciting eye-opener for me. I'm surprised by how much I learned. I was fully engaged from start to finish due to the top notch skills of the presenter. She gave real world examples from her own experience and her enthusiasm for the subject and compassion for this population was infectious. We need more of her.

Presenter was passionate about her mission as an SLP and showed her compassion for the elderly. It was very personal to me as I cared for my mother in law with dementia in my home for 6 years. I can see where my husband and I could have done things differently at times. I did use multi-modal cueing with her but she gave me knew insight.

This was a delightful course which expanded my thoughts and experiences with working on communication needs related to ADL's. In past work as an ST, I personally did participate with activities such as those which were described. However, my interventions and participations for the Bathroom ADL's were much more limited than the situations described for this course. Awesome work!

BRAVA Ms. Thompson- excellent presentation. It is way past the time for SLP's to have the courage to confront those uncomfortable situations with our patients who have dementia. You also have a wonderfully engaging presentation. I can understand why the audience gave many thumbs up, great presentation, etc. Thank you!

Super interesting course and perspective in our roles as SLP and communication. I like that she shared from personal experience transferred into the clinical setting with real, evidence based examples and therapy. She gave clarity on documentation as communication (receptive/expressive) based versus "task" based and how to talk with co-workers/caregivers about our role---as we are the ones TRAINED in communication. Highly recommend this course.
