As a school based SLP working with primarily children in group settings, I have almost zero time to conduct an appropriate language sample. The speaker stated that this was almost like the gold standard, but did not discuss or describe her methods for collecting the language samplings.

I am new to the school setting and the goal writing and goal targets mentioned in this course make lots of sense to me. The goals I’ve inherited often don’t make sense and I wonder how to work on them. This helped think of clear goals and good ways to get measurable data.

I liked how she tried to incorporate multiple aspects of language from semantics and syntax to pragmatics into one goal and using a specific measuring tool to show progress. I also like how she gave norms for total number of words, total number of different words, etc. I also like how she tried to encourage not focusing on one level but all levels of conversation to encourage generalization. I could've used some reminders on how to identify total number of different different words, MLU sampling

Such great and practical information! I've been doing this a long time and can relate with the struggle of writing relevant goals consistently. I can also relate with reading others goals and not having a clear picture of what to work on. (I get really bugged with wordy and numerous goals). I'm keeping the handouts to help me write better goals come the fall!
