Interesting info on trends in development with regards to significant drops in standard scores in testing during COVID. Beneficial information through LENA. Had no idea that a child needs at least 40 conversational turns/hour at the age of 18-24 months…makes sense to turn off the screens and interact!

I have said for a while that children's language was significantly impacted by the pandemic because no one talks to their kids anymore. This will be very helpful for aiding in providing further education to parents on the importance of talking to their kids.

Angie Neal is an interesting, engaging presenter with a wealth of experience to share backed by the most current research to validate her claims. I learned much about the links between the loss of play and brain and language development, and the effects of screen time on early literacy, as well as the aftermath of the Covid pandemic on education. Ms. Neal shares the data, and provides many practical action steps which can be used in therapy, the classroom, and to educate caregivers.

Many parents and caregivers frown on our method of implementation for improving communication skills through PLAY. The instructor gave evidence based information to share with parents, such as, the emissions of play are the exact same needed for reading comprehension, and overall academic success.

It was a nice review with research to support information I already knew such as limiting screen use for infants, and the connection between play and language. I think having a neurodivergent (e.g. Autistic) perspective would have been helpful because expectations such as those in Westby’s Play Scale can come across as ableist.
