Providing real-life examples and strategies, discussing the importance of the distal point, discussing the importance of play observation (use of objects) and how it relates to MLU, the importance of schemas and onlooker play, including our gestalt language learners, the idea of "Stop. Think. Make a Plan", the idea of "let your child have a child-sized problem" and explaining the correlation of play stages and narrative development stages.

I loved this course. So many times we as therapists in the schools often see the need for play to be incorporated not only in our therapy rooms but in the general classrooms as well. I will be using references and information learned from this course to help make the case for more play in the Kindergarten and 1st grade rooms at my school.

I really enjoyed the last module of this presentation. I found the information connecting levels of play to story grammar and selection of books to be very interesting and something that I will definitely incorporate into my own therapy sessions. I work in a program for students with intellectual impairments and I feel this session helped me to better understand their levels of development and it will help me better match them with appropriate activities and texts in therapy.

I have never learned the importance of play (outside of a simple understanding that children learn best through play and not flash cards). Stories and follow up ideas to address. Specific goals were very helpful. Also, giving some examples of short term goals and how to write them was good. Also the section where she gave examples of learning and social skills needed for success. For example, managing impulses and your response would be “wait! Let’s think.”
