The content was very informative. I just had a little trouble with the quiz. The session reported that progressive relapsing MS was the most common so I was confused about the "correct answer". I also thought the author said Parkinson's was most likely to experience spastic muscle contraction, although, I know that all of them can experience spasticity. I just would like those questions to be phrased differently.

There were questions on the exam that were not covered in the course. (I believe the same was true about Part 1 of this course, which I took a while ago.) Specifically, the first question is about the definition of aspiration pneumonia, which the instructor says she will define in the course and then does not. The third question is about which of several cranial nerves are involved in breathing and swallowing. The answers are given as numbers, but the cranial nerves are not referred to that way in the course. The content of the course was interesting and very helpful but the wording throughout was unclear. This may all be because I took the text version of the course?

Thank you so much for highlighting the gastric component of Dysphagia. Working in a SNF, I have seen a significant increase in the number of patients with reflux along with other comorbidities and as an SLP, I have been addressing this issue. SLPs can definitely work closely with the patient, caregivers and family by providing education in aspiration prevention; I also consult with PT/OT in regards to positioning strategies. Some SLPs believe that our role stops at the pharynx...but our role is so vital and we must consider the esophageal and cognitive components of the swallowing process. Excellent course.

In both part one and part two, the presenter is so knowledgeable and organizes her information so that it is easily understood. I learned a lot from both courses. In both courses, I found the idea of the "evolving and accelerating effect of dysphagia-related decline across the bodily systems of the swallow" so interesting. Understanding these interactions between/among bodily systems in a patient with dysphagia is intricate and essential to effective treatment.

In conjunction with Part I of the course, Dr. Winchester provides excellent information re: several neurogenic dysphagia disorders, including emphasis on the wide-ranging effects of dysphagia throughout multiple body systems (always good to be reminded that dysphagia typically is not a stand-alone disorder).
