The examples and videos she provided breaking down what she did good and what could be improved helped to see how this course can be applied to therapy in effective ways for the student. It also made me consider the way I am writing goals and if they are taking into account neurodivergent students.

I'm still trying to grasp these ideas because I have a neurodiverse brain. I don't like this concept that anybody can act anyway they want and we have to accept it. I don't agree with DEI. I'll do the CE requirement, but I'll never accept this because I think differently and ASHA needs to accept that!

This has gone a long way to help me discard the old ways of thinking and embrace the new ways. I was taught that we were supposed to "fix" those who didn't comply with the "norm." This is very good information to bring me up to date. A lot of the behavior that we thought was willful is actually trouble with regulation.

I loved this course and how to write goals/think out the autism population and what would be more beneficial for them and not the norms set out in traditional therapy. I feel that as speech therapists, we are taught to think one-dimensional to therapy and goal writing. This course helped me think about how I can help my clients advocate for themselves and how they learn.

Joleen Fernald is a superb person to be a mentor. Her approach is my ideal. I would watch any presentation she is part of as she is thoughtful and kind not only to the children she works with but to the therapists as well. It is lovely to hear her parse effective and what could have been done better. I have so many parents who are in the position where they are so hard on themselves. I assure them that no one always gets it "right". Progress is the goal.

I liked the informational part. I didn't love the videos, although the speaker acknowledged the errors. But I think it would have been better to show a "work refusal" video and then have the solution on the video to be not to push the student to do work and explain why that was done. So, offering the student choices to take a break/regulate. Although I do appreciate the transparency that the speaker felt that should not have been done.

It gave good examples of tough situations that we as SLPs have to face, and gave suggestions for what worked and ways to improve. I struggle to subscribe to the idea that no social training is necessary for ND individuals, but understand the mindset behind several ND-affirming goals.
