This course provided valuable information regarding caregiver education. Although, I work with pediatric patients and do not work with memory impaired clients, much of this course content can also be applied to the parents/caregivers of my pediatric patients, especially the information related to caregiver support. In addition, having been on the other side (caregiver of a parent with dementia /not the therapist), I agree 100% that caregiver education and involvement is very important.

Caregiver training is essential in the demonstration of individualized, sophisticated and required services provided by the Speech-Language Pathologist, particularly in populations which require the ongoing development of communication and swallowing systems. SNF SLPs are challenged with demonstrating that caregiver training has occurred especially in the provision of Skilled Maintenance Programming. Why would we return a resident to their discharge location without training the caregivers?
