I'm already passionate about this topic. I have noticed a lot of early language Gains that come from early language engagement, such as rhymes, Book reading, Oral narratives, play,And singing. I also loved her examples and techniques that she's used.

The presenter admitted at the outset to being nervous and this was evident. I found her distracted and difficult to follow at times, not because the information didn't make sense but because she kept jumping from one thing to another. The information is very familiar to me so while I didn't gain a lot of new knowledge, some of her examples added ideas that I can incorporate into my therapy.

I question how current the information in this course is. It seems to disregard the science of reading and relies on disproven strategies for teaching reading. I appreciate that good readers constantly integrate their background knowledge into reading and reading comprehension, but my understanding of the science of reading is that students should not be taught to guess what a word might be based on context or picture clues.

Excellent presentation that outlines the roles of SLP in helping to foster the connection between earlier language development and later literacy skills. This was an excellent introduction to addressing reading as an SLP. While the districts I have worked in have employed reading specialists as opposed to SLPs to target literacy, I feel much more equipped to assess literacy as well as support a student with reading and writing difficulties in the therapy room. I look forward to building a child's future literacy and language skills by using literacy-based therapy to support the context no matter their goal.

Presenter recommended strategies that are contrary to the evidence base about how children become proficient readers. For example, she suggested encouraging children to skip over unknown words and use pictures and context to attempt to guess their meaning rather than applying their decoding skills. Angie Neal’s talk discusses how these strategies actually emulate what poor readers do, not what good readers do.
