This course truly changed my approach towards understanding and managing the behaviors of my pediatric patients. Each child is unique in the way they communicate/express their emotions and and it is important to remember that their support system/environment at home and at school has a significant impact on how they handle challenges.

A little too behavior-y for my taste. I realize that when an OT or PT puts their hands on someone, it might be different than when the rest of us do it. Hand over hand is a no no

The instructor presented a good outline to assist in working with children with behaviors that interfere with therapy and their lives. I like the strategies given to stay calm, before working with the child. I think children feel our stress when we approach them for therapy.

I liked the reward system or how we only give positive reinforcement when the student is doing something that we want. We should be giving it more often, but not too much that it no longer means anything to them.

Since you come from direct experience with ABA, your recommendations, methods and philosophy from an OT perspective create a blend of the two approaches, taking away the “rough edges” of ABA. Every BT and RBT should listen to this presentation during their training. It would add so much to the one dimensional approach used by the BCBA’s who train them.

This is a fine course for brand new grads who need to learn about building relationships and instilling trust and safety into the therapeutic setting to support engagement. That being said, "self-stimulatory" behaviors do not need to be, nor should they be, placed on extinction. If they are unsafe to the person or others, then replacement options should be offered.
