The presentation doesn't allow for the fact that "neuro-typical" interests of girls (horses, dolls, etc.) are on a continuum (some like horses more than others, but are still not autistic), and doesn't clearly differentiate between NT interests by girls and those with ASC. In doing so, I wonder if girls are now being OVER identified as being autistic

This course really opened my eyes on how many girls that are missed. I couldn't help to think back on past clients who may possibly be on the spectrum but just did not fully seem to "fit the profile"- but something was off. This course really gave me some clarity on what to look for to become more of an advocate to help caregivers get the proper diagnosis.

I still have Qs. I think a stronger case should have been made about where do we go from here. What role should SLPs play in these females that have compensated and masked so proficiently? I can see how mental health professionals could help with anxiety, self confidence, identity, etc. but what would be within the scope of practice for an SLP when these females are presenting with high language skills and only somewhat different social skills?

I applaud the speaker on presenting such a timely topic! She provided the audience with an engaging and interesting presentation. Before this course, I was unaware of how often females were misdiagnosed with condition(s) other than autism, received a late diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Condition, or weren't given any diagnosis at all. I was saddened to hear about the negative consequences associated with not identifying girls or women on the spectrum in relation to their health and well-being.

It was very eye opening to understand how the initial bias that led to research being conducted mostly on males has impacted females from being identified resulting in it continuing to be through that many more males had autism. The discussion of special interests for females being related to eating disorders was new information to me and the discussion of how some of their intense interests or sensory behaviors can be masked as being just “extra girly”.

You hit the nail on the head. I was not diagnosed till I was in my 40's. The descriptions of the childhood, emotional toll, excessive misdiagnoses etc were completely accurate. I am SLP who has primarily worked with students with autism. I now know why I was able to connect so easily to those students as opposed to being exhausted by trying to fit in with my peers and coworkers. Thank you for shedding light on this issue.
