I liked that the presenter brought in own experiences from her work and the interactions at the end which allowed for follow up comments/questions on the case study itself. For my own learning, I enjoy breakdown different scenarios with a group of people to retain information and the comments at the end for the case study allowed for that opportunity.

Being provided with definitions and difference between an interpreter and translator, especially as the two terms are often incorrectly used interchangeably. Good to know the benefits of closed caption even for those who are able to hear and understand the language. Points made regarding meeting in advance with interpreter, getting interpreter's thoughts for presenting of info and positioning of interpreter with client. Case study, great info on using untrained interpreter and testing ELL.

I work in the schools and often times we are given an interpreter who is convenient or who is easily available. Once given the interpreter, the steps from there are different depending who you ask. I like that this course gave information about interpreting, how to improve skills using an interpreter, laid out some good steps to take with interpretation, and also on learning to advocate for what is needed ethically. I also liked the case study being applicable to situations.

i think its important that bilingual SLP's now know ...they can act as a support person and NOT an interpreter if they feel uncomfortable. Many of us bilingual SLP's have been asked to interpret in many work settings and not all spanish languages are exactly the same...so the actual job of an interpreter needs to be utilized when needed.

Great information on interpreters/translators. As a bilingual-SLP, I often am asked to interpret at meetings. Sometimes, families agree because they trust me as their child's provider. The district hired interpreters often use technical terms when interpreting, and I find myself having to explain to the families, as they will look at me for support during IEP meetings. Finding an appropriately trained interpreter is important for IEP meetings; someone with knowledge of school-based issues.

This is a topic that is not typically covered in depth in the graduate speech programs, but absolutely necessary in order to work effectively and ethically as a speech pathologist. The information on the types of interpretation and the discussion on when interpretation is needed, who to use (professional, team member/colleague, family member, etc.), and how to use the interpreter and establish their role in meetings was very helpful.

This was an excellent course that highlighted the importance of training an interpreter before using them to assist with standardized testing and during meetings. We have seen an increase in Multicultural/multilingual students in our district and rarely have access to a bilingual speech language pathologist. I am going to utilize the information gained from this course to train an interpreter to work with SLPs to interpret standardized assessments.
