During the course I was provided with wonderful interventions that I can use to improve phonological awareness skills in students who have deficits in language. There were so many useful examples. I will certainly implement the use of "the body" in helping the student to remember sounds in words.

However the instructor continually does not clip her sounds so produces /k/ as "kuh", /t/ as "tuh" etc.

I feel that I have left this presentation with new information. The phonological awareness skills that are highly predictive of improved literacy skill outcomes (e.g. phoneme segmentation/isolation, blending, and elision). I have never targeted these specific skills before. I hope to include them in my therapy.

Presenter has some great information, however she adds the schwa to individual phoneme sounds, which is absolutely not helpful for students learning to read or for PA skills.

I really enjoy Kelly's courses. The only thing that I don't like, in reference to the videos she presents, is the competing noise in the room where the videos take place. The noise is distracting and makes it hard to hear the clinician and the child.

great info. One thing though...it seemed that Kelly was almost always saying 'kuh' for the phoneme /k/, 'guh' for the phoneme /g/, 'tuh' for the phoneme /t/...etc.but this isn't isolating the phoneme. We don't say that a feline is a 'kuh..at' ; it's a /k/ /a/ /t/.Does that make sense? Also, I appreciated the videos, but the competing noise from other apparent sessions in the room was very distracting.

When I first started out, I worked for a public school that had the SLPs be the Tier II interventionists for RtI and we did all of this. It was great because of our skill set. I did a Story Champs Lesson at the end to work on Narrative retell. We saw the kids 2x a week. We used did a lot of Elkonin boxes, etc... and phoneme manipulation to create new words. It prevented kids from needing special education. Then the historic DeVos era cuts took place in Michigan.

I was amazed that this instructor did not know how to pronounce voiceless consonants and it made me immediately discredit much of what she said. Any SLP knows that the 'k' sound is not pronounced "kuh" or the 't' sound as "tuh". It made me cringe every time she said that, along with, I'm sure, the 'p' pronounced as "puh". It is IMPOSSIBLE to pronounce the word 'cat' as "kuh-at". The c,t sounds, as well as the p sound, are VOICELESS. I'm still shaking my head that she doesn't know this.
