The instructor explained very well the importance of recognizing the challenges between word recognition and language comprehension in screening and treating reading disorders, as well as using the multi-tiered systems of support, and recognizing the interplay of language in reading challenges (and need for collaboration between SLPs and teachers). Her point about different labels of DLD across contexts which confuses parents and can cause a disconnect between professionals is true.

It was a good overview, but would perhaps have been easier to absorb and elucidate in 1.5 hour presentation. Very interesting. Confirms my therapy approach to parallel presentation of phonology, comprehension, language/grammar , and orthography in a parallel manner. Love the resources! Now to try to delve deeper into DLD.

The presenter is excellent. She did a great job discussing the importance of screening for language as well as reading disorders. Only 20% of kids with DLD are indentified. That means 80% are missed. Shocking when you think that the national trend seems to be focused on screening for dyslexia alone, WHICH is also a language based learning disorder (phonologically based).

Let's shake down this identification practice that I and many of my colleagues have or are practicing. When you combine school psychologist and educational diagnostician AND speech language pathologist, you have a trio of mixed biases and interpretations of all measures administered OR NOT to individual students. This emerging research I HOPE impacts our work
