I was interested in taking this course after one of my students showed tremendous growth in his speech and language skills after having an eye surgery. I myself have some mild binocular vision issues due to a stroke, so this was also informative for that. And I know first-hand how much having those types of vision issues can affect your processing of information, and not just visual information. I think more people should know about these issues and the presenter did a great job at explaining.

I think that the specific activities and examples Ms Hellerstein used within this course, to help the listener better understand what we are looking for with regard to visual processing/efficiency was extremely helpful. I was also very pleased that she provided additional book and online resources that can be shared/referenced by parents or other family members, therapists, school staff members (SEIT, OT, PT, SLP) for additional research/efficacy, therapy recs, referrals, follow up, etc.

I work in EI, and the information has really given me food for thought. I love the quote by Arnold Gessell about babies taking hold of the physical world with their eyes before their hands. It is not unusual for me to go into homes where the lights are off and windows covered - I live in hot, sunny FL and this helps keep the electricity bills down. Information in the article will better help me share about the “whole” of vision, and seeing how we can address having more light.

The thoroughness of this course taught me a lot about the brain-eye connection that I did not know. I already knew the function and location of the visual cortex; however, I had not broken down the process of the brain understanding what it sees. It was discovered while I was pursuing my CSD undergraduate degree that I was Dyslexic at the phonemic level, and I had APD. I found this course to be both personally and professionally enlightening. I can't wait to share what I've learned!
