I love taking courses from this lady. I am totally confused at this point-I totally get the difference versus disorder. How on earth do we teach them that is alright to say "He know who you is" as ok in the school setting. I actually heard a teacher say that to a student. I get the differences-had to explain that to a parent about /f/ for /th/ which is a difference NOT a disorder.

This course presents a great deal of information that has challenged SLPs and teachers of children who use dialects. This presentation will help reduce the number of children still being erroneously placed in speech services based on language differences, which are not disorders.

The information presented, "myth busters" for superiority of any given dialect, handouts and explanations. More examples along the way would be beneficial. The pace was a bit fast, perhaps 1.5 hour course.

This was a great course because it highlights the issue of confusing dialect with errors/disorders. It's important to be respectful of dialectal differences and not use these differences to make assumptions about people. I love that this course focused on how to FAIRLY assess someone with a dialectal difference.

I live in a very multicultural region and basics are a challenge. Teaching to specific dialectical difference is not within the scope of what would be remediated. However, this information is important to widen the lens of teaching professionals who may have limited knowledge or experience with different dialects and bi-or trilingual households.

I really enjoyed the subject matter and the presentation of the subject. The presenter is so very knowledgeable in so many areas. I have enjoyed other presentations she has done on speeechpathology.com. Dialect is something that is very important and needs to be understood not just by SLPs in determining if a child does or does not have a speech / language deficit, but this information certainly does need to be shared with general education and special education teachers. Very well done!

Code switching and code meshing are different but related Code switching - the ability to change from one’s primary dialect to the dialect being spoken or written by a group of individuals to come across as sounding similar to those around themCode meshing - “translanguaging” fosters a blending of dialects of English in speaking and writing to embrace a person’s cultural differences and allows them to be themselves
