I appreciated the clear communication that VCC is more than bilingualism or transgender considerations individually, but a blend of all the cultural aspects. Thank you also for the Q & a at the end. It helped clear up questions I had re reimbursement, and where I can learn specific strategies

Heavy on the research. As someone that does not do research regularly, I would prefer if it could be broken down for me (e.g. a chart that sums up some of the differences in voice across cultural backgrounds). More examples or videos would also have been helpful and broken up the dense infor gained from her personal research.

As an SLP looking to “change career focus”, I’ve been seeking out all kind of resources on working with transgender clients. I completely appreciate this presentation and the work and research that is currently being done. Voice was a topic that was presented in a “condensed” quarter during my master’s program with no instruction what so ever on transgender voice, so I truly appreciate all the insight provided.

August 16, 2023
The presenter used LGBTQ and left out IA+ the entire terminology stands for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, Intersex and queer +The problem then presents when speaking in regard to intersectionality which I have never heard of and have done numerous evaluations in regard to the above population. By leaving out terminology it removes segments of this population. Intersex and intersectionality will be confusing to many.

This is a presentation that would greatly benefit from the use of charts/graphs when describing research results that compare findings in dual-language speakers, as well as videos or recordings of speakers demonstrating typical language/cultural characteristics of different languages. It would be worth extending the class time to 90 minutes if examples were provided.

The content is good food for thought, but its framework, while laying a direction and a common sense approach we should have with these populations, is so specific that the skills it advocates for seems more in line with academic studies, activist work for change, and for use with individuals in private therapy. I am a public school therapist, and while I will certainly integrate the thinking here into my personal philosophy, I have little leverage to advocate for it in practice.
