Resources provided for continuing education in apraxia

December 16, 2024
It was very helpful to learn the early signs of apraxia; I have children that come through our clinic around 2 to 3 years of age, and we can tell that they will have a severe speech disorder but are not able to determine what type when their verbal output is so limited. The resources also were more hands on in terms of learning new information presented in matter of fact terms. Great course!

I wish there was more of a powerpoint to organize and reflect back on the information instead of a 1 page document with links. This isn't helpful long-term when needing to reference back.

Thank you for the reminder to be sensitive to giving the parent the results of testing. SLPs see these disorders every day, but this is brand new to the parent.

I was hesitant with a podcast in which I was unable to see the presenter. However, I loved this format. It made me listen more. I even took notes and this was the most helpful 30 minute course I haven taken. I also loved that the speaker was a parent and also an SLP that works in the schools. She was very realistic of the school caseloads and how that is addressed. I think another mention is that sometimes it's harder to dx apraxia on an evaluation. School SLp's are hesitant to dx.

I think it was good to introduce the complexity in treating CAS. I recently graduated in 2020, and although we learned about Apraxia, I agree with the speaker, we didn't learn principles in motor learning. I think this talk validated it's okay to not know everything in our field, but we need to expand our knowledge.

There were resources provided which was the most positive part of the session. As an SLP, I was hoping for more resources regarding latest research in the field and any new effective therapy approaches as a result of that research. I understand that this was 30 minutes, but even links to those research articles and approaches would have been nice. More emphasis on how critical it is to involve parents in the sessions, and teach parents carryover skills to use with their child was needed.

the specialist in apraxia was extremely knowledgeable but not always specific in her answers. What are the questions to ask a speech therapist to see if they really know how to treat apraxia? What is the place to start with treatment? She didn't specifically answer, probably because she wants people to check her website. And it's a very good resource, but it wouldn't really hurt to answer the questions and explain things fully.
