Not having an option for a video really made it a challenge for me to stay interested and feel connected. The information didn't match some of the questions on the test assessment, and were misleading. This was a nice recap of information that I already knew, but I'm not sure how much it increased my practice skill set. For me personally, I need that interaction or video connection and my first test with this course reflects that.

Excellent information and resources provided on SLPs and dyslexia in the schools. As a SLP, when I was trained in my district with one of the reading programs, it was eye opening to learn these "rules" that was not necessarily taught in this manner in my degree coursework. I truly found it beneficial for my caseload, but also saw the benefits with the teachers using parts of the curriculum within the classrooms.

Too many phonics “rules” especially if they struggle with memory. There are simpler ways to teach these concepts. For instance, syllables for most words with a double consonant like “giggle” will split between the double consonant so there is no need to count back three letters. I work with a fantastic reading specialist whose assessments often line up with mine. Speech therapists are not the only professionals with specialized knowledge of dyslexia.

I knew that we were involved to an extent in working with students with dyslexia however I did not know we could assess. It is treated as an academic concern moreso than a speech concern. Most of the students that i do end up having qualify for Dyslexia are typically exiting speech working on /r/.

Unfortunately dyslexia is present and it is really frustrating when it was not treated at an early age and at middle school it has became a huge snowball due to the difficulty of the reading and writing process that has an impact in the student's academic performance. Additionally self-esteem is affected and behavior component could be present.

I was concerned that during the answer portion of the course that more than once she shared information that was inaccurate. For example, someone asked her about the vowel in the consonant -le syllable. She discussed the vowel in the first syllable and then stated there isn't a vowel in the final syllable. Every syllable must have a vowel. The vowel in the consonant -le syllable is a schwa vowel. Students are taught to read the schwa sound in it but that schwa vowels are not vowels written.
