This information is very helpful in working with patients who have acquired physical impairments. As an SLP, it is important to provide appropriate services (evaluation through treatment) at various stages of a progressive physical impairment. Also important is to focus on what a person CAN do, not what they CAN'T do in terms of communication abilities and possiblities.

I am an AAC Specialis, studied under Dave Beukelman, 32 years of experience with ALS patients and being part of the ALS clinics in town, 1000s of ALS pts - good course for beginners - audited it for my new clinicians. Information needs updating - actually 48-65% of patients with ALS present with cognitive impairment - many studies on NIH. 12-25% with FTD. Further AAC is indicated when speech rate is 50% and intelligibility 90% (Beukelman studies). head tracking not usually indicated

I work with this population in the aspects that she spoke of during today's presentation. We have ALS clinic, I'm the speech therapist involved in this population. It is everything I do and love this population. What I appreciated most, was her breakdown of the spine, bulbar, and mixed variations of ALS and the de-myelinating clear simple explanation of how and why this is affecting the muscle systems of the body. I'm going to register for her other 3 classes now. Sooooo goood!
