I liked how Dr.Burns discussed many current research findings and related their significance to infants,children/adolescents and adults who are NDD or neurotypical. Examples of research findings were described however I plan to learn more of the information in depth from a recent book by Burns.

This was such a good course to dive deeper into the world of neuroscience as it applies to areas within the scope of the SLP. I was particularly interested in the new research findings with incidence, and in the look at how we may need to be angling our approach when working with children who have communication disorders.

As an SLP in elementary schools right now, this was not surprising. I really appreciated seeing the stats on prevalence of SLI/DLD with NDDs I found it interesting especially with the note of maternal age and that definitely has me thinking even more.

I appreciated the introduction to new research that many of us (SLPs) are unfamiliar with. I also found the concept of “sensitive” periods for language acquisition and how they are much shorter for ASD children to be enlightening.

I greatly appreciated the new research findings regarding sensitive learning periods in ASD populations. Especially that clinicians should be targeting the following areas: syntax, modifiers (like size, color, and superlatives), and the ability to follow commands (which may include working memory components).

I was expecting more information/education on differential diagnosis. It didn't include neuropsychological testing and how a child's fluid reasoning, visual-spatial, processing and working memory scores on a WISC-V would aid in differential diagnosis. I feel that many students would still be overdiagnosed with an IEP disability of a communication disorder and other information not taken into account (at least in my middle school, and incoming 6th graders)

I'm a math girl, but even with that, this was way too numbers-based. All of the numbers didn't enhance the content. Understanding them for prevalence is fine, but this became tedious. Also, I thought there would be more (based on the title and blurb) that there would be more info for actually differentially diagnosing and for some form of tx process ideas.

This was a well-prepared and informative report on applying neuroscience in differential diagnosis and intervention in school-aged children. I was surprised to learn about the early developing magnocellular pathways that, if they fail to develop, will impact the acquisition of the subsequential phonological processes needed for decoding the written word. I see this in a family member.

I would love a follow up course that discusses further info about students who present with executive function disorders who may present as DLD due to the heave short term memory load when taking the CELF. Also, the author spoke of aspects of assessments that should pertain to testing phonological processing but no mention of which standardized tests are best for this (e.g. TAPS?).

Neuroscience is something that professionals shy away from after grad school, however it plays such an integral part in understanding WHY a child might be exhibiting the symptoms they are. This course helped solidify and support those neurological indicators and highlighted the fact that we should continue to look at this area when working with our school-aged clients.
