There is a rapidly growing awareness of the importance of a culturally responsive practice when supporting students using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). This course aims to counter the systematic lack of resources and training available to SLPs who work with diverse populations who require AAC, and practically prepare them to better assess diverse students’ needs and implement impactful interventions.

The impact of normal aging on various systems and the differences between frail and well elders are described in this course. Information and interventions are discussed that allow interprofessional team members to support functional mobility, nutrition and hydration, and health management in their geriatric clients, in order to promote successful aging.

Based on the textbook Aligning IEPs to State Standards, this course describes the link between state/federal requirements, state standards, and general education curricula, and how to align IEP goals/objectives with these standards. Case examples are discussed that incorporate multiple academic content areas, as well as assistive technology and self-determination, into IEPs for students with moderate to severe disabilities.

Based on the textbook Writing Measurable IEP Goals and Objectives, this course discusses the concept of measurability and how to incorporate a child’s unique needs into legally correct and clear IEP goals and measurable objectives. Case studies provide best-practice examples of goals/objectives for a variety of scenarios.

Based on the textbook, Achieving Communication Competence, this course describes a three-step process to create an effective intervention plan for people with severe communication disabilities. Assessment of environmental factors and communication skills, implementation and modification of intervention plans, and progress reporting are discussed.

Based on the textbook AAC in the Schools: Best Practices for Intervention, this course is a comprehensive guide for systematically overcoming barriers in the school for students who use AAC. Curriculum-based assessment tools are discussed, along with methods for aligning intervention goals with general education standards, developing lesson plans, and adapting curricula for students with AAC needs.

The end goal of communication intervention is to have individuals be able to participate effectively in conversational interactions. The conversational moves and their underlying foundational skills that are critical to social communication are addressed in this textbook course. Techniques and activities for targeting conversational skills in adolescents and young adults are also discussed.

Information about building a trauma-informed culture in the workplace, including steps to prepare staff/professionals for providing trauma-responsive care to children and their families, is discussed in this course. Essential techniques and strategies for use in the classroom are provided, along with ways to help staff who may have experienced or are experiencing trauma.
