Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) 101 will describe the complex system of care that has evolved over the last 22-plus years. This presentation will include an overview as well as new, emerging initiatives and how you can collaborate with your state of territory program.

Passage of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) has led to dramatic increases in newborn hearing screening, but early intervention of identified children still falls short, with up to 30% of identified children not receiving definitive hearing testing or intervention after initial screening—a phenomenon known as “lost to follow-up.” This presentation reviews the specific barriers associated with the failure of children to receive timely services, including inequities posed by Medicaid, complex enrollment processes, and lack of understanding by many parents and PCPs of the importance of timely follow-up.

Understanding why family coaching is important and how to coach families using evidenced-based practices and family-specific solutions are described in this course. Various ways to integrate family coaching strategies within and outside of session time are also discussed.

There is much controversy about the diagnosis of ankyloglossia and its potential effects on neonatal feeding and speech. Guidance regarding the diagnosis of ankyloglossia and a summary of current research regarding its potential effects on function are provided in this course.

Strategies for working with children and their families to achieve feeding goals are discussed in this course. Typical feeding development, domain-specific (behavioral, anatomical, sensory) interventions, family-specific solutions, and various ways to explore and play with food are described.

Shared book reading is a powerful tool for facilitating language and literacy. The evidence supporting mindfulness practices, and methods for integrating them into shared book-reading activities in order to enhance a child’s ability to listen, look, and learn are discussed in this course. Specific books that are appropriate for such therapy activities are described.

Prenatal and postnatal care provided by a multidisciplinary craniofacial team to optimize feeding, growth and development outcomes is described in this course. Assessment and treatment approaches before and following surgical interventions, including those for mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO), cleft lip, and cleft palate, are shared. An introduction to prematurity and its co-occurring problems and diagnoses is provided in this course. The impact of early experiences on outcomes, and short-term and long-term complications of prematurity, are described in relation to feeding and development.

An introduction to multiple factors - including relationships - associated with feeding development, as well as a review of typical milestones, are provided in this course. An overview of conditions that can disrupt the normal developmental process is also presented.

This is Part 2 of a two-part series. Use of a total oral sensorimotor approach to treatment planning for feeding/swallowing disorders in children age 0-3 is discussed. Long-term and short-term goals and therapy objectives that are measurable, understood by payors, and that address rehabilitative, facilitative and compensatory strategies as well as caregiver engagement are described.
