This is Part 1 of a two-part series. This course describes the benefits of integrating literacy into speech-language therapy and discusses using a multimodal, multisensory approach to optimize engagement and gains across developmental domains.

This course is based on the third edition of the textbook Evaluating & Enhancing Children's Phonological Systems: Research & Theory to Practice by Barbara W. Hodson. It presents the knowledge and skills needed to plan evaluations and implement optimal treatment for individuals with highly unintelligible speech. Topics also include phonetics, phonological development/speech sound acquisition, an overview of the diagnostic process, and various intervention approaches, including the Cycles Approach and its application to bilingual/multilingual individuals and special populations.

The importance of differential diagnosis of speech sound disorders is discussed in this course. How to integrate case history, oral mech, phonetic inventory, and error analysis to determine a speech sound disorder profile is described.

An introduction to aquatic therapy designed specifically for the SLP. Precautions to immersion, reasons for choosing aquatic therapy over land, and tips on positioning patients in water for speech and language are addressed in this course.

There is much controversy about the diagnosis of ankyloglossia and its potential effects on neonatal feeding and speech. Guidance regarding the diagnosis of ankyloglossia and a summary of current research regarding its potential effects on function are provided in this course.

An overview of newer research on human brain development with applications to the differential diagnosis of neurodevelopmental differences that affect acquisition of speech, language, and communication is provided in this course. Prevalence and comorbidities of developmental language disorders with other neurodevelopmental disorder diagnoses are described along with general guidelines for assessment and intervention.

This is Part 2 of a four-part series. It’s estimated that 25-30% of children with autism will never develop fluent speech. This course describes speech development, neurological issue that can interfere with it, and research-based strategies that can be implemented immediately to improve speech outcomes for clients on the autism spectrum.

By age 5, most children worldwide have acquired most consonants, vowels (and tones), and are intelligible. Respectful assessments that analyze children’s speech in all their home languages, and consider standard and dialect forms relevant to the child’s family, are described in this course. Free, evidence-based resources to support SLPs working with monolingual and multilingual children are also shared.

Implementation of a Cycles pattern-oriented approach for multilingual children with highly unintelligible speech is described in this course. Topics include: speech-sound intervention practices for Spanish-English speakers and speakers of other languages, including recommendations for monolingual clinicians; target selection; and strategies for working with families.
