Question

What are the five core competencies of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), and how do they support emotional and cognitive development?

Answer

Social-emotional learning (SEL) is built on five key competencies that enhance both emotional intelligence and cognitive growth. Self-awareness involves recognizing one’s emotions and reactions in real time. Self-management focuses on emotional regulation, helping individuals stabilize their feelings when experiencing intense emotions. Social awareness fosters empathy and understanding by attuning individuals to the emotions and experiences of others. Relationship skills enable effective communication and cooperation, supporting the development of positive relationships. Finally, responsible decision-making involves thoughtful problem-solving, ethical reasoning, and sound judgment. Together, these competencies create a foundation for personal and social development, benefiting both individual well-being and broader community interactions.
