Question

When do you start treatment for patients with PTSD? Do you need to defer treatment until PTSD symptoms are dealt with by other professionals?

Answer

When I first started out in the VA, I actually went to meet with the mental health professionals and asked that question. Their recommendation was to provide cognitive rehabilitation in tandem with psychotherapy. My perspective is, if we recognize cognitive symptoms which are causing distress to the person as they try to re-enter the community, provide treatment. We can offer strategies and prosthetic devices to help them.
