Question

Please define ''transdisciplinary therapeutic approaches'' as it related to the geriatric population, please cite an example or two, and please tell me how the SLP fits into this equation?

Answer

Transdisciplinary therapeutic approaches refers to the SLP working in conjunction with OT and PT as it relates to patient's goals. It could be as simple as having a conversation about current patient's receiving OT/PT services. For example, ''How does Mrs. Z do with bed mobility? Does she seem to understand what it means to roll to the side?'' If she does not it could be an indication of receptive communication deficits. How is Mr. H doing with his gait training? Does he still seem to forget what he's doing or where he is going?'' This could be an indication of lack of attention to task. ''Does Mrs. J realize what to do with the comb or toothbrush when you do ADL's?'' This could be an indication of divergent or convergent categorization deficits. All of these potential deficits can be addressed through speech therapy. Sometimes the SLP may have to dig deeper to recognize deficits. RehabWorks' dedication to program development and training encourages the disciplines to work together rather than as separate entities. In taking this holistic approach to the rehab process you are progressing the ''whole'' patient towards functional gains.
