Question

Do you think there is a relationship between over-scheduling children and fluency?

Answer

Disfluencies in young children often erupt between the ages of 2-6 yrs of age. Many times children experience spontaneous recovery. Children who continue to stutter, in my judgement, appear to respond favorably to a calm and structured environment and reduced chaos and over-scheduling. Fluency enhancing activities by parents and clinicians are recommended as well. The Color Me Fluent program contains extensive information for parents and SLPs of preschoolers, as well as over 50 activities for the older child. We must be ever aware of the many facets of cognitive, language, communication & social skills that emerge during those early years and be sensitive to each child's threshold.
