Question

My son is 23 months old and has Goldenhar syndrome with cervical fusion. He was 6 weeks premature and in the NICU for 4 months due to aspirating Gerd. He has a GT and Nissen and a safe swallow. Speech Pathologists have been involved weekly for 15 months.

Answer

So sorry to hear of your child's backslide in eating. In my experience this happens when something in the gastrointenstinal system is not working as usual. Has he recently seen his GI? If he has been on medications, have they been appropriately increased as he has grown? Even with the Nissen, children can have reflux. Does he wretch? Sometimes the issue can be at the other end of the system. Does his stomach empty in a timely manner? Are his bowel movements soft and easy to move? Once the gut has a chance to recover or heal, children will resume eating. It is a bumpy hard road when a child backslides. Hang in there. They usually don't backslide in eating when they start to walk. I have seen them slow down in their expressive communication when they begin to walk. Sorry for more questions, but hopefully your team can help you sort this out.
