I have a family who has access to Boardmaker and other Low Tech AAC devices. The family is moving "full-steam ahead" with wanting their child to use these types of devices, however I feel the child is still not making picture-object associations which ar

Answer

It is important to consider why the family is so anxious about moving ahead with these options. Is it because the child is doing more at home than at school or is it because the parents are hopeful that the child will make the progress if something is in front of them? If the family has already purchased these items, I recommend that you try and find a way to incorporate them into your therapy. Perhaps, offer concrete and motivating choices on a device paired with object choices. You can provide the object choices first, and then try to pair the object with a picture, next asking the child to find it on their device. I think that if the child is truly not making the picture-object associations, the family will begin to see this as you work with them in therapy.
