Question
What are the six skills for demonstrating empathy to children and why are they beneficial?
Answer
The six skills include giving children your full attention; acknowledge children's feelings with a word; give feelings a name; give children their wishes in fantasy; deliver empathy with a question; and deliver empathy with a limit.
These skills are very important because demonstrating empathy towards children shows respect for their feelings. Empathy helps adults avoid power struggles with children and open up channels of communication. Additionally, empathy invites children to come up with their own solution to problems they encounter.
